Announcing History

Whit Raymond and Scott Molina 1988

And the story goes like this…It was 1993 and Whit was in Kailua-Kona for the Hawaii Ironman World Championship. A couple days before the BIG show, the then PR director of the event comes up and says:
“Hey Whit, so what are you doing race day this year? Do you think you can help out with some announcing?”

Say WHAT!?!

“Yeah, well, you’ve done the race 5 times before, you know the athletes and speak Japanese so you can address the 200 Japanese athletes we have this year. And what else to say? We think you would be great at announcing.”

Huh??? Well I really had planned to be watching the event this year, but what do I need to do?

“You just get on the microphone and talk Triathlon. Talk Ironman.”

Err; um…well ok I’ll give it a go.

And that was it. IT had begun! 1993, Whit picked up the microphone for the very first time at a Triathlon event that just so happened to be the Granddaddy of them all, The Ford Ironman World Championships!

Pretty cool stuff!
